2011 Desk Reference: MA Criminal Laws 2011

In order to prosecute successfully a criminal defendant, police officers must be aware of the elements of the criminal offenses. The Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee is responsible for providing basic training to student officers. A major component of the MPTC’s basic academy programs is the study of constitutional and statutory laws. The study of criminal laws does not end with successful completion of the basic training program. In order to prosecute successfully a criminal defendant, police officers must be aware of the elements of the criminal offenses. It is the police chief’s duty to afford officers the opportunity to remain up to date in this ever-changing field. This Manual was prepared in an effort to assist both the MPTC and chiefs in carrying out their training responsibilities. It is but one tool, and it should be used in conjunction with a department’s field training officer (FTO) and in-service training programs.
